Tuesday, November 30 – Phuket – West Railey Beach

Kho Phi Phis from Phuket-Ao Nang Ferry

Got up very early, bid farewell to the others, then me & Andrew headed off to catch the boat for Krabi province. The ride across the bay was calmer than yesterday, and in an air-conditioned, enclosed boat. Quite pleasant. Took about 2 hours to get to West Railey, where we had to get off, with all our bags, into a Longtail boat, which brought us close into land. We then had to wade in to the beach carrying all our stuff. Unusual, but pretty neat!

Railey is magnificent: towering sandstone cliffs on either side of the golden sandy beach. We get a rather expensive, air-conditioned bungalow just off the beach – oh well, let’s live it up for one day. Sleep through most of the afternoon (too hot to do much anyway) then we walk down the trail (no roads, or motorized vehicles) to East Railey. East Railey is very different, more of a mangrove swamp than a beach, and with lots of building going on – looks more like a construction site than a resort. This is where the cheaper restaurants are – wood poles lashed together, tin roofs. Much less fancy and much cheaper than the upscale places at Railey West. But, as we later realize, the food is actually better here.

We eat at Railey East, buy a climbing guidebook for later (forgot to barter – damn!). Then I booked my flight back to Singapore from a half-asleep travel agent who almost tried to send me to Kuala Lumpur by accident. I caught on when he asked to see my Malaysian visa in my passport. Uh huh. Hoping for the best, fearing the worst…

A cocktail on the beach at Railey West, watching the lightning flashing over the Andaman sea in the distance, then back to the bungalow for an early night. There’s supposed to be a Thai reggae band playing at Railey East, but I don’t have the energy to go.
