Only 16 hours to go, flight SQ21 over Newfoundland
|
Survived Singapore Air flight 21 from Newark to Singapore – 17 hours nonstop. Beautiful view of Manhattan’s lights on the right as we took off. Then northeast, across New England, New Brunswick, PEI and Newfoundland, right over Grand Falls and Fogo. Considered phoning the family in St. John’s from the plane (“Hi! Guess where I am!”) but since it was 3:30 AM there, decided it wasn’t wise. Slept a bit, stimulated my mind by watching “Blade Runner” and “Alien vs. Predator” on SIA’s wonderful on demand entertainment system. Service is good, but the food isn’t as great as I remember Emirates being. On arrival at 6 AM, it was still dark, but about 30 oC and humid. Had the usual lackadaisical customs official that I’m getting used to outside North America. No questions, just stamp and go. Then a cab to Chris & Lisa’s (hard for the cabbie to find, even with a map!). Woke C&L out of their drunk/hung over repose after 3 doorbell rings. Apparently the aftermath of some Dragonboating party or something. Clean up, have coffee, and go for a swim in the apartment complex pool. Feeling much better already.
Dups arrived and failed to eat a fortune cookie (he ate the fortune too, and spewed chewed cookie particulate everywhere in an attempt to remove the paper). Good thing I choose my mountaineering companions so carefully.
Took a cab into town, and ate at Brewerkz on Clarke Quay – Brewmaster from Saskatechewan, it seems. Good burger, good beer, American style and portion size. Then peach margaritas at the Iguana Lounge next door. We sat in the rain and watched Dragon Boat racing on Boat Quay for a few hours. Looks like fun! Jet lag, beer, and absinthe were starting to kick in. So after a brief shopping trip at Raffles City, we subway it back east for a bit of packing and sleep.
Apparently I had told Lisa to wake me up when Dups got in. I have no idea why I said this. But they did wake me up, with great difficulty. I mumbled unintelligibly and fell asleep again, with no difficulty.
