22 Nov, Kota Kinabalu

Monday, November 22 – Singapore – Johor Bahru, Malaysia – Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo – Kinabalu Park HQ.

After breakfast of yoghurt and muesli, finish packing and off to JB. Our cab driver was a veiled Muslim woman, quite friendly and an incongruously aggressive driver. In fact, most cabbies in S’pore seem friendly.

Note to self: however hot it may be out, remember that the AC on buses will just be cranked even higher. So always have a sweater within reach. Brrrrr!!!

First glimpse of Kinabalu by night, Malaysian Borneo

Across the border into Malaysia, and we had a none-too-eventful flight from JB to KK. Air Asia’s planes are designed for people 4’6” tall and are staffed by (male) flight attendants in heavy makeup for some reason. The flights also tend to be late, or, as they put it, “retarded”. But hey, the price is right!

Despite an extensive search, we couldn’t find a working ATM in KK, so we have a bit of a Ringgit deficiency. Now we’ve made it to the Nepenthe Lodge, # 8. A fancy 2-story house! Wish we could stay here for more than one night! Not totally sure how it’s going to work out tomorrow, as the VISA machines here are apparently down. Still, we’ve eaten a good meal at the fancy restaurant, and we should be ready to go in the morning.
